Stuff I Use
And by this I am refering to stuff that I use regularly and I would recommend to other people. :)
On the computer
- Gnomesword
- A Bible study aid for GNOME.
- Debian GNU/Linux
- Certainly one of the best Linux distros out there (and the basis for many of the increasingly popular apt-based distros now cropping up). The lack of a graphical installer may scare the novice away. But at the end of the day Debian is rock solid and has been my longest lasting installation of any kind on my computer. Windows has now been banished from my computer. It was going to be removed (partly so I could use the hard disk to flirt with Gentoo), but then the hard disk it was on failed, so I guess that forced the issue.
- Nedit
- Kate
- Vim
- Nano
- Text editors - for anything from config file edits, coding and web page design.
- Firefox
- A rather nice web browser that you might have heard of. Give something else a try, and stop clicking on that blue e! The blue e is not "The Internet"!
- Python
- The Python programming/scripting language. Very nice and easy to use, and clean looking code, too! It often finds itself being used as my command-line calculator.
- Gaim
- For all my instant messaging needs! (Except Skype)
- Skype
- For Voice over IP.
- XChat IRC Client
- The IRC client of my choice. I really must try irrsi at some stage, but for now XChat does the works for me. (No, I don't bother scripting)
- K Desktop Environment
- Gnome Desktop Environment
- I have been using KDE for some time now (probably 3 or 4 years). I'm now trying out GNOME and rather liking it. Both environments certainly are very good, though.
- Amarok
- For organising and playing my music collection. Saves me a lot of time on organising playlists.
- JPilot
- Software for syncing and backing up my Palm T3 with my PC.
- Unison
- I use this for syncing my home directories on my laptop and desktop computers. A very nice piece of work - will run happily and make good decisions about which files to update. Consults the user before doing anything, particularly in cases that are potentially destructive (by default skipping them).
On the Palm
- PalmBible+
- An excellent Bible reader for the Palm. It's pretty configurable (which is good for software that you can expect to spend a lot of time reading from). It also has text searching, cross references, advanced bookmarking and quick browsing to selected verses. Not to mention multiligual support (at least - it supports Hebrew and Greek text!). I use bible files from mcleanministries.net, which are compatible with this little gem.
- TCPMP
- The Core Pocket Media Player, a media player for PalmOS and the PocketPC, capable of playing videos, audio (including OGG format) or viewing JPEG images. It turns my Palm into a personal MP3 player :) - only I play OGGs on it.
- Puzzles
- A very nice quality collection of puzzles, ported from Simon Tatham's portable puzzle collection to the Palm.
- Sun Angle For Palm
- Handy for finding north, using your Palm and the bearing of the Sun.
- Tide Tool
- Tool for predicting the tides.
- Keyring for Palm OS
- Tool for encrypting and organising lots of passwords and other private information on your Palm.
- Kmoria
- Moria (a rogue-like game) ported to the Palm.
- Plucker
- An offline website and book reader for PalmOS. Handy for if you want to have news websites compiled onto your Palm to read on your regular commute to work, or simply to have a book or manual easily to hang on your handheld PC. Some pre-made books for this (and other readers) are available from Manybooks.net.
- EasyCalc
- Don't be fooled into thinking that this is another scientific and simple mode calculator. Instead this is a whole graphing calculator with equation solving, functions and all sorts!
